UK Smoking Ban - July 2007 [May. 12th, 2007|09:34 pm]

[Current mood is  |blankblank]

Smoking in enclosed public places will be banned in England from 1 July 2007.

The ban covers virtually all enclosed public places including offices, factories, pubs and bars, but not outdoors or in private homes.

So there is only a couple of months to go. As a non-smoker it will be nice to be able to go out for the evening and not come home smelling of smoke, but I can imagine it will be difficult for smokers. I wonder what kind of a difference this will make.

A significant one. People don't need to smoke to live - they do it because it's convenient, or because it's a habit - but it's one that can be kicked. If it is less easy to do it, and there is social pressure against it then it will lead to great savings in hospital bills, fewer unnecessary treatments - and hopefully, longer lives.

It would be good if no-one needed to or wanted to smoke anymore. I guess we'll have to see how successful it is.

Judging from the impact of the smoking ban in Chicago (which is going state-wide soon, yay), you'll have to pass through pockets of smoke to enter most public buildings.

However, it is always nice to not come home with the stench of smoke clinging to your clothes and hair.

I'm all for denying other people the right to make me unable to breathe. :P

the smoking ban in ireland was incredibly successful, and has been very well adhered-to. makes walking about after hours in the city a bit more difficult as the streets are suddenly full of damp miserable smokers outside pubs, but... at least I can breathe inside :3

I'm hoping it'll be the same here in england. finally, I'll be able to go into the student's union after 7pm without dying of asphyxiation! :3
